The Bumble Bee Project

I went to my local hardware store and bought a roll of chicken wire, wire cutters and some wire to connect everything. I sketched the bee concept I wanted and began sculpting.

In this second series of COVID Creations, I had decided during quarantine that I could probably be a sculptor… As mentioned in my first entry in this series, Interior Designers need to work on their own spaces to… This time of COVID-19 has made that more apparent than ever in my own home.

In the journey of expanding our own living space to the outdoors, I also wanted a unique sculpture to accent my backyard. Not an expensive sculpture that needed to be imported or something nice that had little no meaning. But rather, something I made that I could revel in my accomplishments with.

So once again, the creative juices began to flow…

I have always had deep respect and appreciation for bees. Not only do they pollinate to make food for us, they also give us an amazing decadent treat – honey.

I had a random surge of creativity one day and decided I want to make a garden sculpture to add to our newly planted secret garden

I had a vision of a living sculpture with plants and moss growing out of it… I thought maybe chicken wire could help me achieve this look.

Being as I have never done anything like this before – it soon became an experiment. I went to my local hardware store and bought a roll of chicken wire, wire cutters, and some wire to connect everything.

I sketched the bee concept I wanted and began sculpting.

The end result?

This is not for the faint of heart and I highly recommend wearing gloves. I did get a series of scratches and wounds but in the end, it was worth it. Now my husband and I have a mossy bumble bee in addition to our charming little oasis to lay down and gaze at the stars. Simple ideas can be very cost-effective and can fulfill much-needed warmth, specifically when spending most of your time at your home.
