Pantone Color Of The Year 2018 – 18-3838 Ultra Violet

It’s that time again when the Pantone Color Institute (a consulting service within Pantone that forecasts global color trends and advises companies on color in brand identity and product development) selects the Pantone color of the year. Working in interior design, I’m often never surprised by their choice – in fact, we can usually see it coming. Design firms, furniture designers, fashion designers and other influential market segments will often begin to create this shift, thus influencing the upcoming trends that we tend to gravitate towards.

With that being said, the year ahead offers a sense of complexity and ingenuity. The Pantone Color Institute has carefully selected Ultra Violet 18-3838 as the Color of the Year for 2018. Pantone (the well recognized color authority) describes PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet as a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade that communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.

Inventive and imaginative, Ultra Violet lights; the way to what is yet to come”.

We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination”

The elected 2018 shade has already made a significant cultural impact over the past year with Hillary Clinton’s purple-accented Ralph Lauren trouser suit in November of 2016 and Prince’s Purple Rain Deluxe Expanded release with ultraviolet album artwork. September Fashion week in Milan brought Gucci’s spring 2018 collection which was not only presented under an ultraviolet strobe light, but a number of the 106 looks were head-to-toe ultraviolet, from a purple jumpsuit and shimmering ruffled gown to velvet trousers worn with a snake-adorned jacket. We’ve even seen purple take the red carpet and the halls of Buckingham Palace. See a list of celebrities that are wearing the Pantone color of the year. If your personal flair is fashion-forward and color is your jam, then spice it up a bit in 2018 with the Pantone color of the year in various shades.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

When selecting the emotional, moody tone, Pantone drew inspiration from the night sky and gave a deep explanation behind their choice. “Enigmatic purples have long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance”. “Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world and push boundaries through creative outlets.” Pantone also appears to have selected the hue as an implied homage to musical icons like Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix, who all incorporated various shades of purple into their personal symbolism in an effort to express their creativity and individualism.

Using the Pantone color of the year in your home

When selecting a color for your home, many factors come into play. Here a few tips on infusing your space with a splash of this year’s selection:

  1. For your home’s exterior, choose something subtle. Sometimes you’ll run across a home that very vibrantly screams that person’s love for something rash, like yellow or purple or blue. Painting an entire home this way often leaves one wondering what they were thinking. Instead, try subtle tones like greys or white or paint your front door with a splash of blue or red. Then tie it in, inside.
  2. Inside your home, go against tradition. Your home is sanctuary or fantasy come true. If you’d like your reading room bright and sunny then go for a bright yellow to bring out that emotion. You can try ultraviolet, our Pantone color of the year in a living room space or bedroom accent wall.
  3. Create emotion and set the mood. If a soothing environment is what you seek, then choose some other Pantone picks like Angora White or Dove Gray. You can add warmth light pink or almond oil, maybe even some blues.
  4. Balance and comfort. You want your home to represent you in the most comforting and luxurious way possible that is also inviting to others. You might really enjoy colors that spice things up or create seductive spaces. You can ground some of these radiant hues and balance out the warmth by adding rich chocolates, lighter blues or even black. What do you think of  2018’s Color of the Year?

Ultra Violet is complex color because of the mixing of blue and red – two shades that are seemingly opposed. The result is something beautiful, evoking the “mysteries of the cosmos”. What do you think of the Pantone Color of the Year, Ultra Violet?
